Car Locksmith NYC X-files: The Day The Alligator Ate My Car Keys.

A man, a Zoo, an Alligator, and a Set of Keys:
I am pretty sure my story will take the cake for submissions into MetroLocal Locksmith NYC’s customer car locksmith NYC horror stories contest.  You might never believe what I am about to tell you, but here it goes anyway!  I’m an adjunct assistant zookeeper at a popular zoo in New York City.  That’s all the details I’m going to give you on location because I don’t want to upset my bosses any further, and I certainly don’t want to attract any unnecessary heat from PETA or Animal Services.

One a not so distant afternoon, I was going about my afternoon job tasks of cleaning out the house o’ reptiles.  Around about the time I was almost finished swabbing down the upper portions of the ravine wall surrounding the alligator enclosure, I had the sinking sensation that I could no longer feel my key chain on my pocket.  Follow that with the even more sinking sensation I felt when I saw “Big Louie” happily gobbling up my mess of keys that had landed not far from his snout.  To make matters worse, my house and my car keys were on the key chain!

When You Are Suffering From a ‘Locked Keys In Car’ Emergency, And You Don’t Have Access to a Spare Key:

Calling A Trusted Locksmith Is The Smart Thing to Do:

Oops, I Just Joined the “I Locked Keys In Car” Club:

If any of you have driven a car for more than a few years, chances are that you’ve been in this situation: You’re in a rush. You’re talking on your phone to alert your appointment mate that you are ‘almost there,” and in doing so you don’t even notice the normally audible reminder alert that you’ve left your car key in the ignition.  You slam the locked door, and then 30 seconds later you realize what’s happened.  Guess what? You have just joined the club that admits thousands of new members in the USA each year known as the “I Locked Keys In Car” Club. It’s not necessarily a fun club to be in, and the one-time only membership fee can be a costly one at that.  Oh yeah, that job interview you were rushing into when you realized you have locked yourself out of your car is now really hard to focus on since all you can think of is how you are going to fix this new mess you’ve fallen into.

Step by Step: Consider These Things In Working the Problem:

On top of everything, you also remember you don’t have a spare set of keys. What’s the best way to make this very bad “locked keys in car” situation better?  Before you panic, consider a few things calmly:

1.    Calling a tow truck to get your car to the dealership for re-entry service is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Think carefully here.

2.    The police are supposed to be busy with more important things.  Sure you can call them, but they may take forever to show up, and you may be charged a municipal emergency response fee anyway.  Unless you live in a small town or rural area where the police generally have little to worry about, do this as a last resort. Police are often known to have damaged cars when forcing their way into them.  Their concern is for speed of getting on to the next ‘serious’ call, not the value of your property.  Your “locked keys in car” situation is, bottom line, NOT a police priority, nor should it be.

3.    A reliable local locksmith is going to be very familiar with all manner of car makes and models.  They won’t charge you a towing fee, and they will come to where you are.  With the proper training and know-how in place, they can enter the car without damage. Better yet, in case of tough case or a mistake where some damage occurs, a reputable locksmith will  be insured and can cover the damage.

Locksmith Upper West Side Tales – “My Grandfather Left My Son An Old Safe In His Will, But We Weren’t Sure How to Proceed.”

A Locksmith Sees It All:
As a locksmith upper west side professional in Manhattan’s famous Upper West Side neighborhood, I have worked on more than my fair share of difficult and challenging service calls.  I’d say the most frequent calls I get are for people who need to change a lock or upgrade their security along with folks that have lost their house or car keys.  Some people are just plain clumsy and have damaged locks to the point that they need to be serviced or replaced, and of course there are those fabled “broken off keys stuck in the locks” that I have to pry out.

One Recent Peculiar Call:
One recent call from a puzzled parent sticks out in my memory as one of the my favorite locksmith upper west side recollections. reminding me of one of the best parts of doing my job - helping families and seeing people happy and smiling by the end of my service call

Great Gramps and The Gift of the Mysterious Safe:
A customer called me up one day to explain that his 7 year old son had been left an inheritance gift in the will of his grandfather (the 7 year old’s great grandfather). At this point I asked my caller why he was in need of my services as a locksmith upper west side, and he went on to explain to me that this gift was not the average gift of money or a even a golden pocket watch, but rather it was a large 500 pound antique safe!  Furthermore, even though Great Gramps left the safe as an inheritance, there was no information on the combination for accessing the safe to see what was inside.

A Happy, Safe Ending:
Everyone assumed that Gramps had his reasoning for leaving his great grandson a safe, and that there was probably something inside of value for the young boy.  Simple destruction of the safe or drilling out of the lock weren’t easy options, because the boy and family wanted to keep the beautiful antique safe as an heirloom as well.
After several hours of slow and careful work, this locksmith upper west side was able to witness the joy and happy faces of the whole family as we managed to unhinge the safe doors and open it to reveal the wonderful envelope of Certificates of Deposit along with a beautiful letter written especially for the great grandson by Great Gramps himself!
